My Fall Obsession: One Thrift at a Time

Something about the fall air turns me into a thrifting monster — pumpkin spice latte in one hand, hunting for the next cute sweater with the other. It just does something to my soul. And Sacramento isn’t playing around this year; the first rainfall has already hit. There’s always shelter (and a little magic waiting) in thrift stores plus, it’s the perfect way to kill some time.

There’s an art to thrifting, knowing which aisles hide the best oversized knits, which racks have those perfect worn-in skirts, and which corners always surprise you. I love how every thrift trip feels like a small adventure. You go in with no expectations and somehow walk out with a new look. Maybe it’s a vintage jacket, maybe it’s a random mug that feels like home, maybe it’s a new decor item that makes your heart sing. Either way, the hunt is half the fun, adding to my collection is the real gem.

It all starts with a spark to make my home less boring and more my style. That is as easy as scrolling on Pinterest or searching the next fun DIY on Instagram. An easy way to deescalate these feelings is by going on a quick trip to a thrift store. Thrifting clothes is still on the table, but honestly, that is like 10% of my missions now. These days, I am more drawn to decor and finding my pieces for my forever home one day. I have been looking for things that will get passed down for generations a.k.a timeless pieces. There is something heartwarming about finding constant beauty in vintage items rather than buying the new IT on the feed.

The best part is how the rush feels when I finally bring home my new item. It makes my space feel like it jumped right off a Pinterest board! Thrifting a home takes time, there is patience, gratitude and discipline in the process. Digging through every nook and cranny teaches you to see potential where others don’t. I like to think I’m not just buying things (or at least not buying into capitalism too much), but curating a new story out of old ones. Every trip feels like a reminder that good things are out there, waiting. Waiting for the right person to see its worth.

Little by little my home is starting to feel less like a place I live in and more like a reflection of everything I love. Each item has its own story, a memory of when and where I found it, and how it somehow found me too. Honestly the hunt itself has become my kind of therapy, whenever I feel the need to spend or keep up with society, I just wander through aisles of forgotten treasures, ground my reality and keep my pockets from hurting terribly. I find peace in scavenging pieces that make people think “this is so you!” as soon as they enter my home. And that's when I know I did it right!

I think thrifting feeds the designer in me, the part that loves to imagine what could be. It’s like creative problem-solving in real life: seeing potential where others see clutter, or picturing how an old object can be reimagined into something that fits my space. Every piece becomes a small design challenge, a test of vision and true taste. It’s not just about what I find, but how I choose to style it, what colors it plays off of, or where it belongs in the rhythm of my home. In that way, thrifting reminds me that creativity isn’t limited to a blank canvas, it's something that lives in the details of everyday life. And I liiiiiiiiiiiivveeeee for the details.
